About this project
Developed for the Nowt Special brief ‘Nowt and About’, this piece responds to the absence of a defined theme by leaning into experimentation and instinct. The work embraces unpredictability, using layered marks and contrasting forms to explore a more intuitive way of making. Without the constraints of a set direction, the outcome reflects a process-driven approach, where freedom, disruption and spontaneity shape the final composition.

inspiration & process
This work was developed as part of the Nowt Special brief for the exhibition ‘Nowt and About’, where the absence of a fixed theme became a key source of inspiration. Rather than responding to a specific concept, the piece was driven by an interest in spontaneity, visual disruption and the freedom to experiment without constraint. Influenced by urban textures, graffiti and raw mark making, the process became intuitive and reactive, allowing each layer to inform the next. I worked through a series of additions and removals, building up surfaces through bold, expressive marks while intentionally leaving areas unresolved to retain a sense of tension and unpredictability. The composition evolved organically, with no predetermined outcome, reflecting a shift towards a more process-led practice. This approach allowed me to explore the balance between control and chaos, where instinct plays as significant a role as intention, resulting in a piece that captures both immediacy and depth while aligning with the open, exploratory nature of the exhibition.
