About this project

Created in response to the Penguin Book Awards brief, this cover design for Animal Farm critically engages with themes of power, corruption and ideological control. The central figure operates as a dominant symbol of authority, positioned against a stark, high contrast backdrop to emphasise hierarchy and surveillance. The use of POSCA pens is central to the visual outcome, enabling bold, opaque mark making and precise graphic contrast, which reinforces the intensity and immediacy of the composition. The limited colour palette and strong illustrative style further enhance the symbolic nature of the piece, reinterpreting Orwell’s narrative through a contemporary visual language that encourages reflection on the persistence of these structures in modern society.
