About this project

This Final Major Project (2022) focuses on observational painting and the study of form, tone and realism. Centred around a skull composition, the work explores structure, proportion and the subtle variations in light and shadow across the surface. By working in acrylic on canvas, the project allowed for a careful and controlled approach, developing technical skills while creating a striking, minimal composition that draws attention to detail and craftsmanship.

inspiration & process

The project was inspired by traditional still life and anatomical studies, particularly the use of skulls in art to explore form and mortality. I worked from a visual reference, building the painting gradually through layers of acrylic, focusing on tonal values and blending to achieve depth and realism. Careful attention was given to light, shadow and texture to capture the natural surface of the skull, while the dark background was used to create contrast and emphasise the subject. The process helped refine my painting technique and understanding of realistic representation.
