About this project
This body of work was created in response to a brief centred around Durham Cathedral, exploring its architecture, symbolism and atmosphere through experimental visual language. I was particularly inspired by the cathedral’s intricate detailing and historical presence, which I reinterpreted through bold shapes, layered textures and expressive mark making. Using a combination of paint and drawing, I developed pieces that balance structure with abstraction, allowing elements like the circular motifs and sculptural forms to echo the cathedral’s decorative features while introducing a more contemporary, personal perspective. The project reflects my interest in translating traditional influences into modern, expressive compositions.

inspiration & process
Inspired by Durham Cathedral, this project focuses primarily on the cathedral’s rich colour palette, particularly the deep purples, muted tones and atmospheric contrasts found within the space. While colour was central to my approach, specific architectural details such as the rose window and the door knocker also played an important role, influencing the circular forms and central motifs within my compositions.
My process involved layering paint to build depth and texture, creating expressive backgrounds that reflect the mood of the cathedral’s interior. I then developed more defined elements over the top using drawing, allowing structured forms to emerge from the looser painted surface. This combination of controlled imagery and spontaneous mark making creates a balance between abstraction and recognisable detail, resulting in pieces that feel both personal and rooted in the visual experience of the space.
